Illegitimate son of Prince William the Silent by Eva Elinx. The prince supervised his education and sent him in 1576 to the university of Leyden, founded a year before. His father vainly tried to pair him with Queen Elizabeth I.
In 1585 he was appointed commander-in-chief of the fleet of Zealand, with the title of Lieutenant-Admiral. As an admiral he was quite successful. In 1601 he was appointed Governor of Breda.
