MT.GILEAD: Elmer "Sonny" Castle, age 85, of Mt. Gilead died early Monday morning, April 27, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Nippa, KY on February 8, 1924 to the late Noah and Katie (Castle) Castle.
Elmer worked in the shipyards in Jefferson, IN for 2 years prior to serving in the United States Navy in 106th and 90th Seabees battalions during World War II. After the war he returned to work at the shipyards and then worked in the coal mines in Seco, KY before moving to Ohio where he worked as a welder at HPM for 42 years before retiring. From 1970 to 1976 he coached Little League in Mt. Gilead and was proud of his team being the League Champions in 1972. He was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan. Sonny was a member of the National Rifle Association and attended Edison Enterprise Baptist Church.
His wife, Sally Dean (Hayes) Castle, whom he married June 19, 1957 in Paintsville, KY survives in Mt. Gilead.
Survivors also include 2 sons, Elmer D. Castle and David B. Castle both of Mt. Gilead and a sister, Louella Conrad of Michigan.
In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by 9 brothers and a sister.
Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville, KY with full military honors.
