Deacon Raymond R. Granger, 82, departed this life of Saturday, April 25, 2009, at his home.

He was born February 18, 1927, in Charlottesville, to the late Harry R. and Mamie W. Granger. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva B. Granger; a stepson, Robert Jordan II; three sisters, Marion Johnson, Bertha Brown and Beatrice Lipscomb.

Raymond was educated in the Charlottesville city school system, graduating from Jefferson High School. He honorably served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. After returning to Charlottesville, he was an employee of the Richmond Times Dispatch, F.W. Woolworth, and retired from Centel in 1972.

Raymond joined Zion Union Baptist Church at an early age through baptism. He served the Lord through his devotion to the church. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1967, and was currently serving as the Chaplain. Deacon Granger was also a member of the Senior Choir, served as Church Treasurer and held member-ship on the Stewardship, the Men's Fellowship and Auditing Committees. He was the past Secretary of the Official Board and Past Superintendent of the Sunday School and faithfully led mid-week Bible discussion, as well as served on the Building Fund and Planning Committees for the current Zion Union Baptist Church facility. Deacon Granger was also a member of the Deacon and Deaconess Council of Charlottesville and Vicinity and the Piedmont District School Convention.

Deacon Granger leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted daughters, Deborah D. Granger of Charlottesville and Raynovia E. Johnson of Chesterfield, Virginia; one sister, Claudette Barlow; mother-in-law, Safronia B. Jackson, both of Charlottesville; a brother-in-law, Willie E. Brown of Hampton, Virginia; a devoted sister-in law, Minnie B. Williams of Charlottesville; six grandchildren, Tech Sergeant Antonio R. Granger and his wife, Terry, of Anchorage, Alaska, Ullonka J. Thompson and her husband, Teddy, of Warsaw, Virginia, Jesse J. Johnson III and his wife, Kimberly, of Waynesboro, Virginia, Raymond A. Johnson and his wife, Latonya, Safronia N. Willie and her husband, Clifton, all of Richmond, Virginia, and Staff Sergeant Travis L. Granger, United States Marine Corp, and friend, Jayman Cosby, of Charlottesville, Virginia; 11 great-grandchildren; a devoted cousin, Willie J. Bowles of Hopewell, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Joseph May and Anne Waters RN, and all the family, friends and supportive care of Hospice of the Piedmont.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Zion Union Baptist Church with the Reverend Lloyd Cosby Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont.
