Suspect Info: Jacob Miller, executed July 17, 1916
Detective James Maneely, 45, was shot and killed March 25, 1915, while escorting a 21-year old old male prisoner they just arrested on a burglary fugitive warrant to a call box. As Detectives James Maneely and Harry Tucker were in an alley escorting their prisoner to the call box in the vicinity of Cambria Street west of Trenton Avenue, he produced a pistol and shot Detective Tucker. Maneely chased the man and and was killed by a gunshot to the heart. Detective Tucker was shot in the spine died of his wounds on April 24th at Episcopal Hospital. Jacob C. Miller, a former U.S. sailor, was arrested a short time later and charged with murder.
Miller was wanted for a burglary in Princeton, New Jersey, and a robbery of a residence at 52nd Street and Wynnefield Avenue. He was convicted of two counts of murder and executed in the electric chair at Bellefonte on July 17, 1916.
Detective Maneely was an 18-year veteran.
