Milton was the son of Susannah Hall and Caleb Sawyer.

Milton married Keziah Ingalls, the daughter of Jonathan and Abigail Ingalls, in Bristol, New Hampshire, on the 8th day of June, 1832, Rev. Walter Sleeper, a minister of the M. E. church, officated the marriage.

On the 17th of November, 1842, moved into the village of Portland, Michigan, which at that time consisted of a few houses.

Milton enlisted on November 20, 1862 and served with Company G, 27th Infantry of the Michigan Regiment
Served with the Michigan 1st Engineers 1861-1862 and Michigan 27th Infantry 1862-1863.
He was assigned as a "full principal musician". Sawyer was
discharged on July 7, 1863 at Oak Ridge, Mississippi.

Milton was the first elected trustee in the village of Portland and in 1871 was one of the organizers of the John M Megarah Post # 132.
Milton's profession was Blacksmith.
