Margaret was the daughter of Samuel Hetherington & his 2nd wife Mamie Carter. She was born and raised in Reagan, Falls Co., Tx. She was raised with nine half siblings and one younger sister. She told me that one day when she was in high school, the Model-T was not working, so her father picked her up in front of school in a covered wagon instead. She said she had never been so embarrassed in all her life. After graduating high school she worked in Austin as a typist until she met her future husband, Monte Crouch Miles, Jr. of Yoakum. They married in Clovis, NM in 1939, and had two daughters Janice and Judy.

Margaret's 2nd marriage was to Rex G Kveton in 1946, Rex was from Yoakum; they resided on Oak Street in Houston until the late '70's. He had two children by a previous marriage. Rex worked for Texas Marine, Margaret made extra money by driving a school bus and later sewing curtains for the ships. After Rex retired in 1978, they moved back to Yoakum.

Her grandchildren called her "Nanny". She walked two miles a day, rain or shine. She loved to cook and especially loved large family gatherings, always cooked enough for an army. She made the best chocolate pie with a very high meringue. She was the best domino & "shot the moon" player, had high energy and was a joy to be around. With her hand on her hip she would often say "You spell it M. A. N.". Nanny told me she was named after her father's sister, Maggie. She didn't like the name Margaret, nor Maggie.

When I rode in the car with her, she would have me look at something out of the passenger window; when I turned back around, she had pulled out a piece of wrapped bubble gum she had hidden in a box under the front seat. She called it magic, but when I turned too quickly to see her hand under the front seat, I figured it out. I remember her "Houston Stops" she called them (more like a yield), with tires squealing through the stop signs.

There was a 7-Eleven a short distance from her house, we would go through the living room furniture to find change to buy Slurpees - a small one was 11 cents including tax.
