Helen Louise Armstrong, 67, died peacefully on Thursday, April 30, 2009, while surrounded by her family.

She was born February 7, 1942, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the daughter of the late Ida L. Gibson Atkins and Robert E. Atkins.

She was the beloved wife of Charles C. "Butch" Armstrong. Butch will miss her dearly, however he knows she joined her recently deceased sister, Judy Norwood, and brother, Horace Atkins, for whom she grieved profoundly.

Helen is survived by her husband, Butch; her children, Shawn Shifflett and his fiance' Heather, and Fredrick Poole; two grandchildren, Ryan and Leigha Shifflett; her brother, Robert Ray Atkins and his wife, Dolly; and her sister, Mary Atkins. The late Judy Norwood, Helen's sister was married to a wonderful man, Douglas Norwood, whom Helen adored. She was also survived by her long time and cherished friend, Nancy Freeman and her feathered friend, Petey.

Helen had two nieces, Cheri Paschall and her husband, Roy, and their children, Shannon and Megan and Kim Norwood. Cheri was like a daughter to Helen and Cheri's children even called her Grandma. They will greatly miss her.

Helen enjoyed working for Sperry Marine for 30 years. Although she retired in 2005, she remained friends with many of her co-workers. Helen went on to work part time as a daycare provider for the Church of the Blue Ridge. She adored children and this seemed most appropriate for her.

Helen and Butch seemed to make friends regardless of where they went and the Church of the Blue Ridge was no exception. Butch and Shawn would like to extend a special thank you to Rosemary and Lucille for being there for Helen.

The family expresses their sincerest gratitude to Dr. John Kern and Dr. Bret Mettler for providing impeccable service. We also thank the 4 West ICU nurses, Kim, Julie, Bridget, Brad and Andy, for their loving care and compassion during Helen's 21 day stay in their unit.

A memorial service was held Saturday May 9, 2009, at the Church of the Blue Ridge with Pastor Whitney Critzer celebrating Helen's life.

Those desiring, may make contributions to Shawn Shifflett, c/o Charles Armstrong, P.O. Box 337, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980.
