William was the son of Orlando Herd (1842-1896) & Mary Euretta Hill Rhines (1841-1912). He and his wife, May, for some reason played around with the year they were born. According to the 1880 census for Minnehaha Co.,SD and the 1900 for Jasper Co.,MO, William was born in 1870. Later census records and family thought he was born in 1872. He was named for both of his grandfathers, William Hill (1808-1886) and Henry Rhines (1804- 1874).
He was a quiet,even-tempered man and no one can remember him ever getting mad. One time May told him to get on to their son Frank for once, and when he did she got mad at him for getting on to him. He worked on the trains until about a year before he died. He was on a train heading to St. Louis,MO to see a heart specialist when he had a heart attack and was taken off the train in Lebanon,MO and couldn't be revived.
