Louis was married to Juliana Dress, and they were the parents of seven children; Anthony, Louis, Louisa, Mary, Joseph Magdalena and John.
In 1848 He started a Terra Cotta Business in Philadelphia; & in 1856 He relocated to Spring Mill, where he purchased enough land to build a home and a business. He joined with Wm Gilinger to start a Terrra Cotta Business on his Property. Wm Gilinger went on his own in 1861 and Louis continued to operate the business making Terra Cotta Drain Pipes and Chimney Tops.
Well Known in Spring Mill, Louis also owned 44 acres of land in Miquon at one time known as "Lafayette."
Louis is also well known as one of the early inventors of Montgomery County. He held 4 patents; One for the Combined Cooling & Filter System and one for Forming Sockets. The other 2 for improvements on the first patents.
By 1874 Louis had turned the operations of the business over to his Son Anthony and the official name of the Business became Anthony Scharff and Bro's; Louis remained an integral part of the business until the 1880's.
Louis Scharff and the Scharff family were very prominent citizens of Montgomery County.
Louis also traveled to other states to assist in the forming of Terra Cotta Factories.
