Roman Emperor. He was born in 371 AD, and became Emperor at age four when his father, Valentinian I, died. He was proclaimed Emperor by the army as an alternative to his unpopular elder brother, Gratian. He was given control over Italy, Illyricum and Africa, while Gratian ruled Gaul, Hispania and Britain. In 383 AD a bid for power by Magnus Maximus, army commander in Britain, forced him to seek protection from the Eastern Emperor Theodosius, who moved his court to Gaul and placed him under the control of the General Arbogast. He complained to Theodosius about his subordination, and eventually attempted to dismiss Arbogast. In 392 AD he was found hanged, and Arbogast claimed he had committed suicide. He was buried in a mausoleum at Milan which is now the Chapel of San Aquiliano at San Lorenzo.
