The son of William & Sarah (Willi) Byrem, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in or around Liverpool, Perry County, Pennsylvania, where he and his family had lived in 1850. He stood 5' 7" tall and had black hair and brown eyes. He married Mary Nancy Rinehart January 4, 1863, in Perryville, Juniata County, and fathered Sherman Lewis (b. 03/21/66), William (b. 09/11/68), and Samuel S. (b. 11/11/70).
A Civil War veteran, he first served as a private with Co B, 36th Pennsylvania Militia, July 4 - August 11, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis. He then enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
He died in Harrisburg hospital of "dropsy and heart trouble."
