Laverne Casey Burroughs was born on February 26, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri. She went to nurses training at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She graduated in 1950 and began her career as an RN. She married Dr. John T. Burroughs in 1966 assisting him in his practices as a cardiothoracic surgeon and attorney. Their son Brien was born in 1970 and Laverne put all of her energy into being the best mom she could be. Brien remained the love of her life until her last day.

Laverne will be remembered for her strong independent spirit, her quick wit, her no nonsense advice (whether you asked for it or not!) and her desire to always help others. From her family to her career to her friends and community, she always wanted to help people. Even in her times of struggle with cancer in her last months, she was always willing to help the people around her. She would have chemotherapy in the morning and then ask me what she could do for me later in the day. She was the kind of friend who would do anything for you.

As her friend, I was amazed by the strength she showed during her 4 month battle with esophageal cancer. I never saw her shed a tear or complain- of course as a retired RN, she had plenty to say about the health care system, but she fought her battle with hope and dignity until the end. I was honored to be with her for 12 years of friendship, during her cancer battle and when she took her last breath. She is survived by her son, her sister, nieces, nephews and many friends. We all miss her so much.
