Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 18 from the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church for Mrs. Elizabeth Thurmond Ferguson, who died Friday at the Meadowview Nursing Home in Minden following a lengthy illness. The church pastor, the Rev. Larry Joyner, officiated at the funeral. Burial under the direction of Conger Funeral Home was at the Mount Lebanon Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Nolte, Pete Lyles, Mike King, Philip Towns, Willis Carter, and Charlie Cox.
Mrs. Ferguson, affectionately known as Aunt Bess, was born January 31, 1881 in Mount Lebanon, the daughter of Jennie Ardis and Jesse Pitman Thurmond. She was educated in the schools of Mt. Lebanon and taught school in Bienville Parish prior to her marriage to Hanslo Ferguson, who died in 1923. She was a member of the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, a charter member of the Mt. Lebanon Historical Society, and the Mt. Lebanon Home Demonstration Club. She was extremely active until her illness beginning in June 1970 and was an inspiration to all who came in contact with her because of her boundless energy and zest for life.
She is survived by one son, Hal H. Ferguson of Glendale, California; a granddaughter, Mrs. Betty Riggs, and a great-grandson, Robert Riggs. In addition, she leaves three nieces, Elizabeth Morrow Eubank of Atlanta, Ga., Eva Morrow Connell of Minden, and Virginia Morrow Newman of Mt. Lebanon. Two nephews also survive, C.H. Thurmond and J. Moss Thurmond of Shreveport.
