He was the son of Jeremiah and Nancy (Lindsey) Mellen. He married 29 January 1820 to Abigail Mills. While living in New York he was engaged in the woolen mill business. He and his wife came to Rockton in 1854, and they purchased a farm three miles east of Rockton.
