Alonzo Mellen married firstly at Skaneateles, Onondaga Co. NY 11 (or 6) June 1844 to Sophia Hall. They were the parents of a son and two daughters. They came to Rockton in September 1852, when he began making wheel barrows. Bird & Peterson had completed a factory building east of the Wright paper mill, and Mellen was the first to use the facility where he carried out his business for three or four years. He then sold out to Bird & Peterson and bought a farm two miles east of Rockton. After a number of years there, he moved back into the village and worked several years as a book keeper for the Bradner, Smith & Co. paper mill until his retirement. He was active in the Congregational church having been a deacon for many years, and he also served several terms as church clerk and trustee. His first wife died in June 1890, and on 7 July 1891 he married Emma McConnell.
