Margaret married John Hix on Sept 20, 1868 in LeSalle Co, Illinois. They were the parents of Eva, George, Charles John, Edward and Henry (twins), and Caroline.

The Odebolt News - May 19, 1927 - Again we must here record the death of another of our Sac County pioneer women, Mrs Margaret Hix, who passed away at Storm Lake, her late residence on Sunday May 16th at the age of 76 years, 6 months, and 22 days.

Mrs Hix had not been in the best of health for a number of years and it was long since when she suffered a siege of sickness and her life was despaired of. However Mrs Hix rallied again. Her trouble commenced to bother her again and her condition not being strong enough to withstand the ravages of the disease. Her life slowly ebbed out.

Mrs Hix was an extraordinary woman. Her main care was the well being of her children after her husband passed away. The quality of management came in good stead when she was alone to care for her children after Mr Hix passed away.

Margaret Reutzel was born Oct 1850 at Kefenrod, Hessen Darm., Germany. During the month Aug 1868 she came to Mendota, IL where she was married to John Hix Sept 20, the same year.

Seven children were born to this union: Mrs Duesenberg of Garner, IA; George, Conrad, and Caroline of Storm Lake; Charles of Alta; Henry of Odebolt; and Edward, who made his home at Odebolt until the time of his death March 3?. In 1870 they moved to Vinton, Union county, Iowa where they lived until 1875 when they came to Odebolt, IA.

They faced all the hardships of pioneer life. Great sorrow came into life when her husband was taken from her side after 12 short years of married life, leaving the mother to life's battles single handed. She ? herself upon her husbands ? that she would keep and raise the children together, if she would have ? it by means of the hoe and spade.

She lived near and in Odebolt for 45 years, after which she moved with her daughter, Caroline to Storm Lake, where she resided up to the time of her death, May 16, 1927.

She leaves to mourn her departure, 6 children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and two sisters: Mrs Henry Kessler and Mrs Edward Krahl, both of Odebolt.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. Bearers were 6 grandsons - Al? Hix, William Hix, Marion Hix, George Hix, Warren Hix and Howard Duesenberg. Interment was made in the German Methodist cemetery, 4 miles northeast of Odebolt by the side of her departed husband.
