Philip Muchner Irwin was the son of Samuel and Rachel (Sigler) Irwin. He was born December 11, 1838 in Licking County, Ohio. Note: some early histories give the mother's name as Rachel Pitzer (1775-1864) - but she was the mother of Rachel Sigler and wife of John S Sigler Jr. The families were among the earliest settlers of Ohio, moving there from western Maryland between 1800 and 1810.
Philip was a farmer and operated a threshing outfit in Ohio. In 1880 he moved with his family to Adams County, Indiana. There he bought and cleared farm land, buildin a one-room log cabin for his family. Over time, the family bought additional acreage and expanded their home.
Philip married first Elizabeth Eleanor Rutledge, daughter of early Ohio settlers Zachariah and Sarah (Roberts) Rutledge. The couple married in Licking County, Ohio in 1864, and had 5 children there: Cary Elmer, Charlie, Virgie Corine, Pearl, and Manley. Their sixth child, Annette, was born in Indiana. Elizabeth died in 1888.
Philip married second Lurena P Dailey/Dailey, daughter of Thomas and Sophia (Ritter) Dailey, on February 10, 1894. They had two children: Iva May and Zelpha Jane.
Philip was a member of the Evangelical Church and also taught singing. He died December 16, 1915.
