Civil War: Co. E, 1st New Mexico Infantry

José Ta[r]rín y López was born at Isleta, Nuevo México, México, (now Isla, El Paso County, Texas). He was the son of Nicasio Anastacio Tarín y Acosta and María López y Reyes. He became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of New Mexico's sovereignty in 1848. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private at La Mesilla, New Mexico, April 8, 1864, and was mustered into Company E, 1st New Mexico Infantry, at Las Cruces. He was described as 24 years old, 5'5" tall with a dark complexion, black eyes and black hair. Private Ta[r]rín was mustered out at Fort Union, New Mexico, September 12, 1866. His brother, Calistro Tarín y López, also served in the 1st New Mexico Infantry. After the war he returned to Isleta where he married Rosa Telles y Varela (1846, TX) about 1868. José appears as a resident at Isleta in the 1880 and 1900 US Census. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Isleta, Texas, January 15, 1894, and received application No. 1,155,825 and certificate No. 979,792. Sometime thereafter he moved with his family to Santa Monica, California, where he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle on July 23, 1901. He died at the soldiers' home March 22, 1905 and was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
