The Assumptionists were founded in 1850 in France by the Venerable Emmanuel d'Alzon (1810-1880). In the wake of the French Revolution, which defiantly declared the "Rights of Man," Father d'Alzon was an apostle of the "Rights of God" - the right of God not to be excluded from human society. His vision was to work for the coming of the reign of Jesus Christ in human hearts, in society and in the world, and to give a doctrinal, ecumenical and social dimension to all their works. D'Alzon's broad vision would take the Assumptionists to many countries throughout the world both in his lifetime and after.

Fr. Henri Brun AA, one of the original disciples of the Founder, was born on Oct 1, 1821 in Langogne, France, was ordained in 1845, and also served as the first assistant of the congregation. He volunteered to go to Australia in 1861 and then arrived in New York on Sunday, April 19, 1891. Father Brun was an able and energetic Assumptionist, and also one of the few who was fluent in English. He worked diligently for four years to establish a community in America. It was not until after his death on January 15, 1895, at the age of 74, that the ship containing other Assumptionists arrived in New York Harbor.
