Peter Bruinsma and his wife, Jobina, were longtime advocates for disability rights and facilities. He was a co-founder of the Christian Heritage Homes, in which their son Mark, who was born with Downs Syndrome, was one of the first residents. They were also involved with the creation of the ARC of Monroe County, the Mary Cariola Children's Centers and the Rochester Christian School. His faith in God was deep, and he was a member of the Rochester Christian Reformed Church for 90 years, where he became an elder. He was devoted to his family and his church, and said that he felt the most important thing he had ever done was marry his wife.
