Obituary:
Maurice "Cap" Heckler, 97, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Shippensburg Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 8, 1904, in Upper Lehigh, Luzerne County, he was a son of the late Maurice and Louisa Heckler and the widower of Marjorie Maclay Heckler, who died May 2, 1999.
Mr. Heckler was a 37-year employee of the Scotland School for Veterans Children in Scotland and was a graduate of that school.
He entered in 1917 at age 13. After graduation he was a military instructor, assistant coach, head coach, athletic director, assistant superintendent and acting superintendent.
In the last 77 years, Mr. Heckler missed only one commencement exercise and alumni day. His philosophy as administrator and disciplinarian was firmness and kindness.
Mr. Heckler played halfback on the undefeated 1923 football team and was inducted into the inaugural class of the South Central Sports Hall of Fame.
His nickname was "Cap" because he held the honorary rank of captain of the Scotland Corps of Cadets at the time of his graduation.
The school's football field was named in his honor in 1981.
Mr. Heckler was one of the oldest participants to win medals in the Pennsylvania Senior Games and received a rare honor from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point when it bestowed upon him the honorary title of Captain of the Corps of Cadets.
He was active in Franklin County civic affairs during his 36 years of retirement and received the Franklin County "Volunteer of the Year" award.
He was a member of George Washington Lodge No. 143 F&AM, Zembo Shrine of Harrisburg, AAONMS, Harrisburg Consistory, SPRS, 32nd degree, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, and Kiwanis Club of Chambersburg.
He is survived by two sons, James of Cape Coral, Fla., and David of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a daughter, Anna Louise of Shippensburg; a sister, Rose Kramer of Freeland; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and 13 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2695 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, with the Rev. Beth Lupolt officiating. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5:30-8 p.m. Monday in Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, and from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the church.
