OBITUARIES SEPTEMBER 2008

Calvin D. Allen, 74, of Houston, formerly of Jacksonville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, following a courageously fought battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Allen; his parents, Mason and Alma Allen; his brothers, Alfred, Earl, Luchies, Wesley, and Junior Allen; and his sisters Jessie Marie and Virginia Allen. He leaves behind a family that loved him dearly including daughters and sons-in-law Karla and Randy Spann, Karen and Tim Mullinax, Kachel and David Mullinax; and his greatly loved, nine grandchildren, Ryan, Brittany and Nathan Spann; Karah, Kayla, Kourtney, Korbin and Kalvin Mullinax; Timothy Mullinax; brothers and sisters -in-law Bennie and Evelyn Allen, Murl and Juanita Allen, Charlie and Sheila Allen; sister-in -law, Mary Allen; sisters and brothers-in-law: Ava and Max Ray, Alpha and Marcus Hanks; numerous nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends. Calvin Allen was a long-time member of the Cochran Street Baptist Church in Houston where he served the Lord for many years as a deacon and music director. In the past few years, he had been a welcomed visitor at the Peoples Church in Jacksonville when he would come to visit family. He was a commercial painting and decorating contractor in the Houston area since 1964; a member of Heights Rotary Club, past president of Northside Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Masonic lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his family and he will always be remembered as a man who considered his family and friends God's greatest blessing. Services were held at George H. Lewis funeral home in Houston with Rev. Martin C. Devries officiating. Special speakers included nephew, Randy Allen of Baytown and Rev. Andy Fannette of Jacksonville. The family would like to express a special thanks to his physician, Dr. Mohammed Attar, and his staff for the compassion and personal care given to him and his family over the years. Pallbearers were Sam Lapaglia, Randy Spann, Tim Mullinax, David Mullinax, Ryan Spann, Nathan Spann. Honorary pallbearers: Korbin Mullinax, Kalvin Mullinax and Timothy Mullinax.
