Obituary:

Funeral services for Velma Ellen Smith were held in Everton Baptist Church, September 29, 1988.

She had been a resident of Hillhaven Convalescent Center in Springfield, Missouri, for the past two years and died in Springfield General Hospital, September 27th, after a long illness.

She was born to Charley and Maude (Vandegrift) Stockwell, November 19, 1904.

Her mother died at an early age and she was raised by her grandfather, John F. Vandegrift and her step-mother, Elizabeth, assisted by her aunt, the late Tennie Vandegrift Ivey.

She became a Christian at an early age and was a member of Everton Baptist Church at the time of her death.

Velma was united in marriage to Walter J. Smith, January 8, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1972.

She lived a few years in Iola, Ks. then returned to her native town for the remaining years.

She was tax collector for Rock Prairie township for 6 years and was Everton Correspondent for the Greenfield Vedette for over 30 years. Survivors are: Four sisters; one step-daughter, all of CA; Cousins Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Smith, Clyde Smith and family, Orine Bain and family, all of Springfield, MO.
