Walter was first married Martha Ellen Jones and two daughters were born to this marriage: Naomi Ruth Smith and Juanita Lorene Smith.
After Ellen's death, Walter married Velma Ellen Stockwell. They had no children.
Walter was an awesome man who loved to write. He had his own column in the Dade County Advocate, Greenfield, Missouri, in the 1940s titled, "Reminiscing". His stories about old times in Dade County, Missouri relived many memories of days gone by.
Walter worked for the Lehigh Portland Cement Plant in Iola, Kansas, for 40 years and retired from there.

Walter Smith died Saturday morning, Oct. 21 at his home in Everton.
Mr. Smith, 90, was a lifelong resident of Everton. He was a retired electrician and a member of the Everton Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Velma; two daughters, Mrs. Naomi Wynn, Iola, Kan.; and Mrs. Juanita Horner of Lower Lake, Calif; and a sister, Mrs. Norma Grisham of Springfield.
Funeral services were Monday afternoon, Oct. 23 in the Everton Baptist Church. The Rev. Gary Phillips and the Rev. Dallas Kilmer officiated at the services. Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery.
