Rev. Msgr. Leo A. Beierschmitt, 81, of Priests Retirement Residence in Harrisburg; died Sunday in the Carolyn Croxton Slane Residence, Harrisburg.

He was retired and Pastor Emeritus of St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church of Swatara Twp, where he designed and constructed the St. Catherine Laboure Shrine of the Miraculous Medal.
He was born in Mt. Carmel; was a graduate of St. Charles Seminary, Philadelphia; and was ordained May 22, 1948. He served as assistant at St. Edward, Shamokin; St. Patrick Cathedral & St. Patrick of Carlisle; a Pastor at Holy Family & Immaculate Conception, York; and a former Friar of Bishop J.W. Shanahan Assembly of Harrisburg.
He was founder and former Executive Editor of the Diocesan newspaper, "The Catholic Witness," a former Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, directed the reorganization of the Diocesan Cemeteries, and established Resurrection Cemetery.
Surviving are two brothers, John Beierschmitt of King of Prussia and Joseph P. Beierschmitt of Bowie, Maryland.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by the Neill Funeral Home, Paxtang.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Catherine Laboure Church, 4000 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111; or to Hospice of Central PA, 98 South Enola Drive, P.O. Box 266, Enola, PA 17055-0266.
