According to the Helena Daily Independent, Fred was driving the Boyle Valve Special when he flipped in the air and plunged down the steep banking of the board track at Rockingham - Salem, New Hampshire race track. Fred was a four time starter in the Indianapolis 500, with three top ten's and one eleventh place finish.
He was living in the Los Angeles area at the time of his death.
