Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Amherst County Health Department for almost 40 years. She was a founding member of the Amherst Woman's Club and the Village Garden Club. Rachel also worked by her husband's side as founding members of Winton Country Club. She was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church serving as the "Pew Fairy" and working as a cereal packer for Amherst Cares into her 90's.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Rachel was preceded in death by one brother, James W. Napier. She was also the last of her generation in the Babcock family.
She is survived by her daughter and grandson, Debra Babcock Habel and Robert, of Amherst who were her devoted caregivers since her husband's death in 1992. She is also survived by her daughter, Marsha Babcock Bryant of Seven Lakes, North Carolina and her children, Kimberly Bryant Schindler (Richard) of Virginia Beach, Tiffany Bryant Gelzinis (Gintaras) of Virginia Beach, Travis Bryant (Tara) of Seven Lakes, North Carolina, and Justin Bryant (Brittany) of Forest; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Martin of Lynchburg and Helen Thomas (Jack) of North Carolina; a brother, Bobby Napier (Charlotte) of Lovingston; two devoted nieces, Betty Thacker (Jim) of Lynchburg and Patricia Babcock House (Bo) of Appomattox; and a devoted nephew, Emory Wood (Joy) of Illinois.
Family will receive friends at Emmanuel United Methodist Church from 4 until 6 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 401 N. Main Street, Amherst with Pastor Nancy Johnson officiating. Interment services will follow at 3 p.m. in the Babcock Family Cemetery, Appomattox. In lieu of flowers, the family requests those wishing to make memorial contributions to consider Emmanuel United Methodist Building Fund, P.O. Box 451, Amherst, VA 24521, which incorporates an elevator and other improvements to assist the elderly, or Amherst County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1397, Amherst, VA 24521, where Rachel's daughter, Debbie is the Executive Director and Rachel enjoyed many hours of visiting the job sites and becoming "grandma" to all of the children.
