Lala was the daughter of James B. and Juliana (Vigil) Woodson.

At the age of 14, she developed an illness which lingered for some time, as documented in the diary of John Lawrence. [Lawrence and the Woodsons lived together west of Saguache.] From the many entries regarding Lala's illness, she was tended by Dr. David Heimberger, and it appears she had an infection [perhaps sinus or ear infection] which proved fatal.

The stone inscription gives a death date of April 25, but from reading the diary entries, it appears she passed away shortly before midnight, April 24.

[April 24]: ". . . Mrs. Church went home this morning and Lala appears to us to be getting worse all the time, but the Doctor thinks she is not, but only weaker from [exhaustion]; but as we were alone, I went up and brought Mrs. Laughlin down. . . ."

[April 25]: "Al Church and wife, and one other man came last evening to watch overnight, and from dark on, Lala appeared to be sinking fast. The Doctor came about 10 o'clock, and he pronounced her very low. He [tried] to get up a reaction but could not and left, and at 4 minutes past 11 o'clock at night she died. Mrs. Laughlin and Mrs. Al Church [laid] her out, and this morning Mr. Church came and made the coffin. Bob and his brother [trimmed] it off. I got the trimmings down at Mears & Co. and in the evening there was a large number come to sit up with [her body]. Bob went around and notified some of the people of her death...."

It is presumed she was buried at Hillside Cemetery the following day, April 26.
