OBITUARY

THE CHARITON PATRIOT
Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, April 11, 1918

Thomas William Ashba was born in Tippecanoe county, Indiana, June 4th 1846, and died at his home in Russell, Iowa, April 4th, 1918, aged 71 years and 10 months. He was united in marriage to Miss Jane Nevins, March 15th, 1870.

To this union were born ten children, five of whom have preceded their father in death. They are Keziah E., Letitia A., Lee, Leila Baker and one who died in infancy.

Mr. Ashba joined the United Brethren chuch in Pin Hook, Indiana ub 1869. He with his family moved to Lucas county, Iowa, in 1873, where he has lived ever since, and for the past thirty years has had a blacksmith shop in Russell.

He united with the Bethel United Brethren church upon moving to Iowa, and when the family moved to Russell in 1879 he bacame a member of the Russell Baptist church of which he was a member at the time of his death. He had not been in good health for some time, but kept at his work until early in the winter, when he was stricken down with a complication of diseases. Good medical treatment and faithful nursing however, got him out early in the spring, but a relapse came and all that could be was done to relieve his suffering, which at times was severe.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Narvilla Wright of Des Moines; Mrs. F. A. Corthon, of East Las Vegas, New Mexico and Mrs. Bert Goltry, of Russell; two sons, Alphonso of Russell and Abram, of Ottumwa.

He also leaves fourteen grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Anna Ogle of Los Angeles, Calif., one brother, Alonzo T. Ashba, of Albia, and two sisters, Mrs. Julia Strong, of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Ella White, of Russell.

Funeral services were held from the Russell Baptist church Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment was made in the Russell cemetery. The beautiful floral offerings expressed the sympathy of friends for the family.

Among those who attended the funeral from a distance were Abram Ashba and wife, Mrs. Alice Toole, of Ottumwa, Alonzo T. Ashba and wife and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Ashba, of Albia, Mrs. R. W. Newman, and Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Ashba and daughter, of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Allen and Mr. and Mrs. John Allen of Derby.

The sympathy of all goes out to the faithful wife who stayed day and night at his bedside during his protracted illness, and to the children, who assisted her.
