Dorothy R. Schullo, 86, Cumberland, Wis., passed away peacefully Monday, May 19, 2014, with her family at her side. Affectionately called “the sweetest woman in the world” by many, she will be greatly missed.
Dorothy was born in Arland on Jan. 4, 1928, the daughter of John and Mamie (Gasper) Hellman. She graduated from Barron High School in 1947. After graduating, she worked on the telephone switchboard in Barron.
In 1951, she married Mike Schullo. Together they owned and operated a dairy farm in the Cumberland Township, Barron County, for over 30 years. While raising three boys with a husband who worked for over 30 years full time for 3M, Dorothy was able to keep their dairy farm running smoothly. She was able to do all of this with nary a complaint and with an everlasting amount of patience.
After retiring from farming, she worked 12 years in the housekeeping department at Cumberland Memorial Hospital.
Dorothy lived for her family. A devoted wife for 58 years and loving mother and grandmother, she was always willing to sacrifice her own time and comfort for her family.
In their retirement, Dorothy and Mike spent many, many hours together fishing on nearby lakes (nearly always catching their limit), as well as taking fishing trips together in Canada with close friends.
Dorothy was always happiest when she was doing something, whether it was watching and supporting her children and grandchildren with their sporting events, going to horseshows with her granddaughters or playing cards and marbles with her friends.
Surviving are sons Michael (Rosie) and Dan (Pam), both of Cumberland, and Joel (Christine) of Milton; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister Margie Luedke of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a sister Eleanor Anderson and a grandson John Schullo.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 23, from St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Cumberland, with Father Tom Thompson and Father Jim Powers officiating. Burial will follow at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. Thursday from Rausch and Steel Funeral Home, Barron, to be followed by a prayer service.
