John was born in Caledonia, Minnesota to Coronal and Mrs Sam McPhail.

He was one of the early comers to Fairbanks arriving in 1905 from Golovine Bay.

In 1906 his sister Mrs G.W. Anderson wrote to Chief of Police Jim Hagan requesting information on where he could be located as his father had died and he was a co-heir to his estate with his sister and his presents was needed to clear matters up.

There was also a letter written to Golovin addressed to "Chief of Police Golovin Bay " The letter was brought to Fairbanks where it is reported that his father Capt. Sam McPhail had left a estate valued at $5000,000.00.

He had been managing the 8 Below Road House in Ester for about a year when the letter was printed in the paper before he even knew about it.

Sometime before 1920 he married Anna C Holmgren. She was born in Sweden about 1863 immigrating about 1898. She was the cook at the 8 Below Road House and must have been widowed because she was known as Mrs Holmgren

John was a prospector in the early years coming from Dawson to all over last later he had placer mines in Fairbanks.

So who is to say if his inheritance was really $250,000.00?
