Patrick "Pete" Whelan was the son of Edmund Burke Whelan and Helen/Ellen Flannagan Whelan.
In order to get a job in a store, his anti-Irish Catholic boss made him agree to be called "Pete" instead of "Pat". Patrick met his wife, Mabel Hunt, who was working at the same store.

Patrick and Mabel were married in 1898 in St. Cecilia's Church, Back Bay, where Patrick had served as an altar boy. He was 21; she was 19 when they were married.

Patrick's sister, Margaret, made Mabel's wedding dress. His sister Elizabeth was a bridesmaid.

Their first born child, Mabel A. Whelan, born 28 March 1900 in Rhode Island, died at age 2.

Son, Hilary H. Whelan, studied for the priesthood but left and got his degree at Boston College. He became a counselor at Westwood High School. He married Marguerite O'Brien. He died at age 65, November 26, 1967, of cancer.

He was shipwrecked and miraculously rescued after 7 hours in a crowded lifeboat in the North Atlantic.

Gerald served 3 addition years as a Major in Iceland. After leaving the service, he became Rector of the First Redemptionist Church in Rochester, New York; then President of St. Mary's College. Lastly, he served as pastor of Our Lady of the Mount, a one priest parish on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.
