Lena Irene McCulley was born on July 30, 1911 in Deep River, Iowa the daughter of Walter and Kathryn Smothers Ladley. She was raised by her grandfather William Ladley and her aunt Ida Ladley. She attended country school near Deep River. Lena was united in marriage to Vernon McCulley on January 19, 1932 at the Methodist Church in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple farmed in the What Cheer area for several years. Lena was a devoted wife and mother. Milking twenty head of dairy cows twice a day and having her husband and children feed before going to bed was all in a day's work for Lena. Lena is survived by two daughters, Lenora (Jim) Coulter of New Sharon and Phyllis (Maynard) Gresham of Washington; seven grandchildren: Diana (Randy) Fuqua of Arkansas, Janna (Jim) Hawkins of Texas, Rodney (Vickie) Coulter of Georgia, Debbie (Jeff) Stanford of Montezuma, Bruce (Karen) Allen of North Carolina, Doug (Luwana) Damerville of Oregon, Rick (Wendy) Damerville of Washington. She also leaves behind several great grandchild, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vernon McCulley; a daughter and her husband, Neva (Max) Allen; a sister and her husband, Mildred (Durward) Marrow; a niece and her husband, Lillian (Ron) Howard.
