My dear Grandpa . . .
CLARENCE EUGENE WIDDIFIELD 1903-1965

Wedding Anniversary 8 December 1922

Clarence Eugene Widdifield was born on the 26th of February 1926 in Harlan, Allen County, Indiana the son of Mordecai "Mordie" Widdifield, II 1874-1937 and Rosa Ellen FALES Widdifield 1878-1964. He also had one sister, Leone Agnes WIDDIFIELD born on the 5th of April 1901.

Clarence's Father - Mordie and Mother - Rosa were the Parents of two children:

(1) Clarence Eugene Widdifield 1903-1965
(2) Leone Agnes WIDDIFIELD Mortorff 1901-1986

On the 8th of December 1922 Clarence Eugene Widdifield married Madge Delores GRAVES 1904-1988 in Paulding, Paulding County, Ohio. Madge was born on December 8, 1904. That was ALSO the wedding anniversary of Madge's parents Burleigh Graves and Artena Belle ASHCRAFT Graves - December 8, 1901 and her Grandfather, Emanuel Samson Ashcraft, born December 8, 1845. Their Granddaughter, Carole Anne Brown was also married on December 8 wearing her Grandma Madge GRAVES Widdifield's original wedding band that she was given. Madge's daughter and Carole Anne's mother, Phyllis was also married with this heirloom wedding band.

Clarence and Madge Widdifield were the parents of 4 children:

1 - Billy Gene Widdifield 1923-1925
2 - Phyllis Elaine Widdifield 1926-2000
3 - Garth Eugene Widdifield, M. D. 1928-2014
4 - Duane Alden Widdifield

Clarence had a very happy personality and really loved his family. He loved to travel the United States, especially to historical areas. Clarence and Madge would go out west to California on vacation every two years. They would go to Las Vegas and bring big cups of silver dollars, half dollars, quarters, nickels home to show us along with souvenirs for each of us. I still have my glass dome of painted desert sand. Clarence loved cars too - and had a brand new Cadillac every three years except for the year the new Buick "Wildcat" convertible came out. He bought the bright red one and it was a beauty!! He LOVED that car!!

A couple of special memories of my Grandpa was, he always had a bottle of Pepsi Cola in his hand and a roll of peppermint life savers in his pocket. Whenever he came over to our house to visit he would "sneak" a half dollar coin into each of our hands telling us to not tell the other kids. And the big memory - he let me drive his Buick Wildcat home when I was only 15 and no drivers license. I was a nervous wreck but he just laughed and said "you're doing just fine." Grandpa also built homes and a church on the far north side of Indianapolis. I remember me and my brother going with him to the building sites. They built their new home at 7858 E. Westfield Blvd and I just loved that house. My brother and I spent the night there many times while growing up. Another special memory was Christmas Eve. We would go to Grandpa and Grandma's house and they would always have a tree to remember - a Pink flocked real tree with white lights, tinsel, and brand "new" Shiny pennies all over it for decoration. It was the most impressive Christmas Tree I have ever seen - it sparkled so much. Then after all the gifts were opened, he would take my brother, sister, and myself for a ride "downtown" to see the Monument Circle and stores all lit up for the holidays. That was a big deal back then - there weren't many shopping centers so it made going "downtown" a special occasion, plus in those days only "rich" people could afford outdoor Christmas decorations and lights so that was just as special.

Unfortunately, Clarence had heart trouble in 1965 and spent some time in the hospital recovering. The last time he was hospitalized, we were supposed to go visit him that night - but - it was pouring down rain so hard, that we - Grandma, my Mom - Phyllis, and I decided since he was being released in the morning we would not go that evening. We were so shocked the next morning when the hospital called telling us that he had gotten up, walked to the end of the bed, had a heart attack and died at the age of 62. Clarence was buried at Concordia Cemetery on the south side of Indianapolis and has a shared stone with his wife, Madge who joined him in 1988. You couldn't have asked for a better Husband, Dad, and Grandpa - he was so Awesome and is missed sooo much!!
