Late Mrs Therese Tynan

The community of Johnstown lost one of its most respected and best loved citizens with the death on July 30, of Mrs Therese Tynan who succumbed to a long battle against Alzheimers Disease.

She had a great love of life and she nurtured that love in her children who adored her. A founder member of the Irish Countrywoman's Association (ICA) in the parish she took part in many community activities.

However, Therese Tynan's first love was her family. She thought the world of her three children Tom, Fiona and Ronan and never forgot the two little ones she lost at a very young age.

And there was not a dry eye in St Kieran's Church, Johnstown, when Tom Tynan spoke lovingly of his mother while his brother Ronan's angelic tenor voice perfectly reflected the mood among the mourners. Tom thanked all who had helped the family through his mother's illness and mentioned the Alzheimers Association of Ireland and the Carlow-Kilkenny Home Care team among many for their contribution during her care.

Therese had been in poor health for some time before her death and passed away peacefully in the care of the staff of Drakelands Nursing Home where she was lovingly cared for over the last number of years.

The 83-year-old was a member of the Hunt family from Muckalee. She was educated at Cathal Brugha College, Dublin and later went to England where she taught for a number of years.

She married her late husband Ned (Edmund) and returned to the parish of Johnstown which she quickly made her home.

She later went back to work as a dietician at Portlaoise General Hospital and Carlow District Hospital.

Following her death her remains were waked for three days at her daughter Fiona's home in Johnstown.

The main celebrant at her funeral Mass was Fr. Frank Maher, parish priest of Johnstown assisted by Therese's cousin, Fr. Martin Ryan.

She is survived by her sons Tom and Ronan; daughter Fiona, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brothers John and Ralph; sister Chris, other relatives and friends.
