John was the last of 9 children (6 sons and 3 daughters) born of David Fox and his wife Mary Colburn. John's siblings were: Mary (b. 1740), David (b.1741), Tamer (b. 1743), Josiah (b. 1745), Zillah (b. 1746), Eliphalet (b. 1749), Simon (b. 1751), and Jonathan (b. 1754),

On May 14, 1775, John enlisted as a Private in Captain Peter Coburn's Company, Colonel Ebenezer Bridge's 27th Regiment of the Massachusetts Line. During this enlistment, he served 8 months at Cambridge.

In 1776, John then belonging to the 2nd Dracut Company of Militia was hired by Peter Heseltine and engaged to serve 5 months at Canada to the credit of the Town of Dracut by order of the Continental Congress of June, 1776. He engaged with Captain John Ford's Company, Colonel Jonathan Reed's Regiment. They marched from Chelmsford on July 25, 1776, served 5 months at Fort Ticonderoga and was discharged at Albany, New york, January 1, 1777.

In 1777, John again enlisted to the credit of the Town of Dracut. He served 3 years from March 31, 1777 in Captain James Varnum's Company, Colonel Michael Jackson's Regiment of the Massachusetts Line, on the Continental Restablishment in General Ebenezer Learned's Brigade. John was honorably discharged from this serivce at West Point, New York, March 31, 1780.

John married, May 27, 1782 at Hollis, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, Sarah Worcester (1755-1849) by whom he had a numerous family, including Abel Lovejoy (b. 1794), Lydia S., Leonard (1800-1872), and Jonathan (1806-1854).

In 1794, John moved to Groton, Gafton County, New Hampshire. He was enumerated there in the 1800 US Census as the Head of a Family with 1 male and 1 female of 26 through 44 years of age, 3 males and 1 female under the age of 10 years, and 2 females 10 through 15 years of age.

In 1803, he and his family moved to Hebron, also in Grafton County, New Hamsphire. He was enumerated there in the 1810 US Census as the Head of a Family with 1 male and 1 female 45 years and over, 1 male and 1 female under 10 years of age, 1 male and 1 female 10 through 15 years of age, and 1 male 16 through 25 years of age. In 1821, he moved to Centre Harbour, Strafford County, New Hampshire.

Sometime after the taking of the 1830 US Census in Centre Harbour and before 1833, he moved to Hardwick, Caledonia County, Vermont accompanying his son Jonathan, with whom he and his family resided.
