Emma Stella Gadd was born on 23 May 1879, Pipestem, Summers County, W.Va., one of 11 children of Powell Wade Gadd and wife Emma Melissa Martin.

Stella married three times. Her first husband James Anderson Elmer Via died on 21 Nov 1902 in a timber accident. Their son Dewey Via was a few months old. She married and divorced Charles Odey Farmer. Then she married Leonard Haliburton Vest, a widower with a young son, in 1907.

She had eight children -- son Dewey Abshire Anderson Via (born 1902), her child with first husband Anderson; stepson Claude (Claudie) Raymond Vest (1901), son of husband Leonard Vest's first wife Clara Alice Plumley, who died a few months after Claude's birth; and six daughters with Leonard Haliburton Vest, Verna Veatrice Vest (1908), Golda Mae Vest (1911), Sylvia Gladys Vest (1913), Nina Arabelle Vest (1916), Josephine Vest (1920) and Ola Pearl Vest (1922).

She was preceded in death by her husband Anderson in 1902; daughters Sylvia and Josephine Vest in 1921; her son Dewey Via in 1936; and husband Leonard in 1960. Sylvia and Josephine died within a few hours of each other in 1921 of diphtheria. (Stella's family Bible records the date as Sept. 2, 1921, for both girls. However, their sister Nina remembers Sylvia dying at 9 p.m. and Josephine dying at 9 a.m. the next morning.)

Mrs. Vest died on 24 Jan 1965 in the White Oak Mountain, W.Va., home of her daughter Golda Vest Smith, surrounded by her family including daughters Verna Vest Bennett, Nina Vest Bennett, Ola Vest Riffle and Mrs. Smith.
