In 1860, he was a resident of Safe Harbor, Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and stood 6' 1" tall with dark hair and brown eyes. By 1862, he was a lock tender on the Susquehanna & Tidewater Canal and living in York County.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County October 24, 1862, mustered into state service at York November 22 as a corporal with Luther's Independent Militia Company, and honorably discharged with the unit July 23, 1863, at Harrisburg.

He married widow Susan Campbell, née Sourbeer, September 21, 1867, in Safe Harbor. (Her first husband allegedly had deserted her in 1860 and died in the war). Their children were Christian (b. 01/21/71), Josephine (b. 08/08/73), Susan (b. 04/28/75), and Catharine (b. 02/09/77). He died from consumption.
