In 1863, Edward volunteered and served in Co. F, 26th New York Colored Infantry, as 1st sergeant until 7 Oct 1865.
On 10 Jan 1868, he enlisted in the Regular Army at Cleveland, Ohio, and was assigned to Co. H, 24th Infantry Regiment (the "Buffalo Soldiers"). He participated in the Victorio Campaign. He served as Quartermaster Sergeant of his company for 19 years and also served as Post Commissary Sergeant.
He died on 23 Apr 1890 (sic) at Fort Grant, Arizona, of Bright's Disease and was buried there (Plot 2-72).

Musician Rounds played Taps at the funeral. Pallbearers from the 24th Infantry, commanded by Sgt William Henson of Company H were:

Edward was re-interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery (On the Trail of the Buffalo Soldier II by Irene and Frank Schubert). Edward passed away on 14 Apr 1890 (Fort Grant Burial Register, page 233).
