Oregon Pioneer of 1847.

Elam Young was born in Albany County (changed to Saratoga County after his birth)*, in New York, on Nov 5th, 1788, to Clement Young and Kezia Hollister Young. Elam married Irene E. Eaton on Oct 24, 1808 at Otsego County, New York. They chose to come to the Oregon Territory to raise their family and arrived in the Oregon Territory on Oct 8th, 1847. Elam was a millwright.
He and Irene settled in Washington County in the Oregon Territory near his grown children and their families. They filed a Donation Land Claim in Washington County, Oregon, DLC#OC 0040 and their land grant was listed in the Provisional records at Tuality County of the Oregon Territory on May 30, 1848 (Vol 8, pg 031). Because he was married, both he and his wife were able to claim 320 acres for a total of 640 acres of rich fertile land in the Washington County area. He only lived in his new home for eight years before he passed from this life in 1855. His wife went to live with their son, John Quincy Adams Young and his family until she also passed away, ten years later in 1865 and was buried next to her husband at the Union Cemetery in Washington County, Oregon.

I have been advised by Cathy Tennant that Elam's parents were Clement Young and Kezia Hollister Young. His paternal grandparents were Clement Young and Lydia Knapp. I've not been able to locate them in the Find A Grave system. Any information regarding this family will be gratefully acknowledged.

I have received a note from C.Thompson reminding me that Elam was born in Albany County, New York, which was changed and became Saratoga Co., New York, after his birth. Since Albany County is still listed as a county of New York on Find a Grave, I've amended Mr. Young's place of birth to reflect his original place of birth. Thank you, C. Thompson.
