Father Preker came to the United States in his early twenties. He completed his philosophy and theology courses in the Seminary at St. Meinard in Meinard, Indiana. He was ordained by Bishop Gallagher in St. Mary's Cathedral in Galveston, Texas on June 21, 1894, and celebrated his first Holy Mass in St. Joseph's Church in Galveston.
With the exception of three years, when he was pastor at Frelsburg in Colorado County, all of the more than 40 years of Father Preker's priestly life were spent at Tours. In 1897 he was assigned by the Bishop as pastor of St. Martin's Church in Tours, Texas. Father Preker liked Tours and remained there until his death.
