R. E. Israel Sr. Dies at Age 74

Served as City Commissioner (1933-36)and(1937-49).

Robert E. Israel Sr., 74, 1126 Coolidge, a lifelong Wichita resident, died Saturday night at a local hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Israel, who was in the real estate and insurance business in Wichita for 50 years, was born Dec. 9, 1886, in Wichita. His grandfather came to Wichita in 1872 in a covered wagon and started building shotgun houses. These were built with the rooms arranged in a straight line.

He was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church. He had served as president of the Wichita and the Kansas State Real Estate Boards. He was a member of Rotary Club, High Twelve, a Masonic service club and other Masonic, groups.

Mr. Israel had spent a half century in the real estate and in insurance business. His firm has been active in Wichita ever since those shotgun houses were built.

He served two years as mayor of Wichita. He once made the comment that "Not too long ago you had to go to Kansas City for a whole bunch of things you can and do get right here in Wichita now. It is a wonderful city and I can't for the life of me think of any reason why it should stop growing."

Mr. Israel was an ardent sportsman and had one of the finest collections of antique firearms in Kansas.

In recent years he served as an appraiser of real estate. He worked in that capacity for the city, county, state and private, concerns. He also served for al period as manager of the Bitting Building and before that as an agent for the Mead estate. He was a special appraiser for the! Home Owners Loan Corporation.

Survivors include his son, Robert Eldon, who represents the fourth generation of Israels to be in the Wichita real estate and insurance business: four daughters, Mrs. James Moody, of the home, Mrs. L. C. Jackson Jr., 559 N. Brookfield, Mrs. Bill Bachman, 2469 Coolidge, and Mrs. T. G. Slattery, Yokohama, Japan; two sisters, Mrs. Basil Carter, 743 N. Waco, and Mrs. Ray G. Warren Sr., Topeka; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Byrd-Snodgrass Funeral Home.

Robert E. Israel Funeral Service Set for Wednesday

Funeral service for Robert E. Israel Sr., 74, of 1126 Coolidge. who died Saturday, will be held, at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Byrd-Snodgrass Funeral Home with the Rev. Cletus C. Cary,, St. Paul's Methodist Church, minister, officiating. Burial will be at Wichita Park Cemetery.

Masonic graveside services! will be conducted by Wichita Lodge No. 99, AF and AM.

Pallbearers will be Tom Janssen, Robert Janssen, Robert C. Israel, James Moody, Bill Bachman and L. C. Jackson Jr.
