Reverend Rufus Whitaker was born in Adams County, Illinois where he lived until his mother died in 1892. In 1894 his father remarried and he moved with his family to Kansas.

Sometime around 1903, Rufus is married in Nemaha County, Kansas to Viola May Pitman.

Rufus becomes a minister in the United Brethren of Christ Church sometime between 1905 and 1908 where he becomes the first minister of Kismet, Kansas.

After a time in Kismet, KS, he becomes the minister in Beach, ND of the United Brethren of Christ Church from about 1912 to 1916.

In 1916, he leaves the United Brethren Church and becomes ordained a minister in the Congregational Church of Cold Springs, Montana.

From 1916 to 1930, Reverend Rufus Whitaker performed many ordinances as the minister in the following towns:

Cold Springs, Montana
Plevna, Montana
Fallon, Montana
Rapelje, Montana
Judith Gap, Montana
Missoula, Montana(Whitaker Drive named for him)
Green River, Wyoming
Kill Deer, North Dakota

He retired from the ministry and settled down in Denver, Colorado in the late 1930's until his death in 1941.
