Gilbert Byrd Bice was born in 1837 in South Carolina to James Byce and his wife, Mary. He served in the Georgia Infantry during the Civil War. Gilbert married Martha Box Bramlett, a widow with two children, on 26 September 1865, in St Claire, Arkansas. Their daughters were Mattie, Savannah, and Dora Bice. The family was living in White River, Arkansas, according to the 1880 US Census. Gilbert Bice died after 1899 in Alto, Texas, and was buried at Old Palestine Cemetery.
