There is some controversy whether our emigrant ancestor, the first James, was born in Holland or Wales or England.

James I or Sr., settled on the Yadkin River on land which had been surveyed by Daniel Boone's party.

Before 1773: Married Sarah Riley. I believe all their children were born in Wilkes County, N.C.

c. 1773: Son, Joseph Brown, born.
c. 1775: Son, Thomas, born.
1774-1776: Son, James Brown II, born.
c. 1778: Son, Samuel, born.
c. 1780: Daughter, Susan, born.

1780: 100 acres of land sold to William Apperson, Wilkes County, North Carolina.

1782: Wilkes Co., Tax List

c. 1782: Son, Humphrey, born.
c. 1785: Son, Eli, born.
c. 1787: Son, Frank, born.

1788 June 2: 200 acres purchases on Howard Creek & Meat Camp.

1788 July 10: 143 acre Land Grant in the Yadkin River area.

1789-1790: 640 acres purchased at Meat Camp.

1790 Wilkes County, North Carolina Census:
Jas. Brown MALES: Free, White 16 & up = 2; Free, white under 16 = 1; All other free people = 8

1793 Feb. 9: Zebulon Baird to James Brown 300 acres on Howards Creek

1798 Aug. 23: James sold to his son, James II or Jr., 200 acres of land.

1805 April 22: Will Written. Died sometime following.
