CSA, Co. D, 1st SC Cavalry; After the Battle of Gettysburg (it began July 1, 1863), Eli contracted typhoid fever during the retreat of the Confederate forces. He became so feverishly ill that he had to dismount his horse and lay down on the side of the road. Some hours later, he was rescued and taken to the home of Colonel Yancey on the Shenandoah River near McGaheysville, Rockingham County, Virginia. His devoted wife Lou was notified of his serious illness and traveled the hazardous route from South Carolina to reach his bedside. Despite the loving care he received, Eli died on September 4, 1863. His body was brought back home and buried at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in the Baton Rouge section of Chester County. The young widow and their two year-old son, Eli Alston, returned to live at her father's home in Fairfield County. Lou later married Colonel RICHARD WOODS.
