Lavinia Butterfield was born to James Butterfield and Anna (Clark) Butterfield on 16 February 1814 in Farmington, Franklin county, Maine.

The Butterfield family were a very early New England family. Lavinia's ancestors included Revolutionary War patriots, and her father served in the state militia and as a selectman for his city.

The Butterfields were a founding family of Farmington, Maine.

The Clark family also have roots in very early New England. Anna Clark's father, Bunker, was at Ticonderoga according to his Revolutionary War veteran's pension file. He knew Moses Chandler, another pivotal early figure in early colonial history.

James and Anna Butterfield settled in Farmington, Maine, and farmed, and raised their family. They had no fewer than eleven daughters - no sons known of.

Lavinia Butterfield was their fourth daughter. On 22 January, 1840, she married Thomas McClellan Davis. Thomas was born in 1811.

Thomas and Lavinia Davis farmed in Farmington, Maine, and raised four daughters and a son: Ellen, Julia, Lucia, Hattie, and Thomas.

Lavinia died, aged 82, from pneumonia, on 18 February 1896. F. O. Lyford, M.D. was attending physician.

Lavinia is buried beside her husband Thomas, in the town they grew up in and raised their children in: Farmington, Franklin, Maine.
