James Butterfield was born 1 January 1786 to (Colonel) Samuel Butterfield and Hannah Chandler. James Butterfield was born in Farmington, Franklin, Maine. He wed Anna Clark there in 1804. Their children included Nancy, Hannah, Matilda, Lavinia, Emily, Dorcas N., Elvira, Emeline, Julia A., Theresa, and Maria.

James Butterfield passed away 13 June 1866 in Farmington, Franklin county, Maine, USA. He is buried there in the Butterfield cemetery.

The following is quoted from "A History of Farmington, Franklin County, Maine."

James Butterfield settled upon the south half of the homestead farm and made it his home for life. Although unpretending in manner, Mr. Butterfield was highly esteemed by his townsmen, who called him from time to time to fill many important offices. He served the town as selectmen in 1817, 1819, 1820, 1821, 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1835, 1839, and was representative to the legislature in 1824 and 1825. Upon the organization of Franklin County in 1838, he was appointed chairman of the board of County Commissioners, and in 1840 was again appointed to the position. Mr. Butterfield served in the militia in various capacities, chief of which was colonel of the 2nd Regiment. He married Anna Clark, who was born October 4, 1784, and (she) died April 3, 1864. He died June 13, 1866.
