Son of Colonel Samuel Butterfield and Hannah (Chandler) Butterfield.

Born in Dunstable, Massachusetts, on 30 May 1780. Married Sarah Merrill in June 1801. Sarah, daughter of James Merrill, had been born in Raymond, New Hampshire, in July 1782.

When Moses was around a year old, his parents had moved their family to Farmington, Maine. The family passed the first three winters living in a glorified lean-to of wooden poles covered with elm bark. They were the fourth family living in Farmington, Maine.

In 1783 the family upgraded to a 'frame house,' the first of its kind in that town. This little house served for family and public meetings until 1789. At that time, they built "The Butterfield Red House."

The red house was painted white when Moses Butterfield took ownership of it after his father's death.

Moses Butterfield also inherited Samuel Butterfield's land in Sandy River. That land amounted to two hundred acres. Samuel Butterfield had paid one dollar per acre for it.

Moses Butterfield continued in the family tradition of community service. He was town treasurer in 1832, and representative to the General Court in 1835. He and his wife, Sarah, had ten children.

(Facts sourced partly from "The Chandler Family: The Descendants of William and Annis Chandler (1883)" by George Chandler.)

Moses Butterfield had attained the age of 86 years and 4 months, at time of his death.
