Annie was born August 15, 1853, in Gettinge, Gardstanga, Sweden, the daughter of Jens Jensen and Elsa Nilsson. Her father died when she was eleven years old; and the following year, Annie and her three sisters came with their mother to Millville. She and her mother sheared sheep for a share of the wool which she washed, carded and spun into yarn.
Annie brought two children to the marriage, Joan Vilate (Isreal Barlow) and Agusta (died as a child).
